Health authorities have confirmed the first human case of West Nile virus in Seine-et-Marne, a department east of Paris, according to a report from actu.fr published Friday. Officials stated that no other cases have been reported in the area so far.
The infection marks the latest in a series of West Nile virus detections across metropolitan France this year. The virus, which is transmitted through mosquito bites, has been spreading in multiple regions, with recent reports documenting cases in Provence and Vaucluse. In Vaucluse alone, six human infections have been identified, while Provence has recorded 18 confirmed cases of mosquito-borne transmission, according to regional news outlets.
French health surveillance systems have been tracking West Nile virus alongside other mosquito-borne illnesses such as chikungunya, dengue, and Zika. The national monitoring bulletin issued in late August highlighted the ongoing presence of these pathogens in mainland France, signaling a broader trend of mosquito-transmitted diseases gaining a foothold in areas where they were previously uncommon.
